Over Length Vehicles or Loads

A permit is required when the overall length of the vehicle and its load exceed the legal length for the vehicle configuration.

Note that straight trucks will not be permitted for over length, but may be permitted for another exception such as a fork lift attachment.

You can apply for an annual permit if the overall length of the configuration (excluding straight trucks) does not exceed 31 m.

Unless the vehicle and load meet the criteria laid out in another standard, the following apply:

  • overweight axles or axle groups are not permitted on annual over length permits
  • the load must be non-divisible
  • vehicles with legal interaxle spacings may carry legal weights with a rear effective overhang of more than 35% of the wheelbase

Note: General Conditions must be followed for any permitted vehicle. There will be additional conditions that apply if the vehicle or load is also over length, over height or overweight.

Standard Over Length Permit Conditions

Length conditions are applied cumulatively. The operator must adhere to all conditions up to and including those for the maximum length of the load or vehicle, whichever is greater.

For example, if the load is 42.0 m long
