Guiding Principles
In Manitoba, people with intellectual disabilities have the right to make their own decisions. The Adults Living with an Intellectual Disability Act is the law that gives you these rights. Any program or service that is provided to you must follow these five guiding principles:
- You can make your own decisions.
- You will be encouraged to make your own choices.
- If you need help making a decision, friends, family, and service providers can help you to understand your choices so you can make the decision that is best for you.
- Any help you receive will respect your privacy and dignity as an adult.
- If there is a decision you feel you cannot make even with help, a substitute decision maker can be named for you, as a last resort.
Community Living disABILITY Services follows these guiding principles when working with you.
