Speed Limits

As of March 1, 2019, Manitoba Infrastructure sets speed limits on roadways in Manitoba including provincial trunk highways, provincial roads and roads within unorganized territories. Municipalities, First Nation communities and local traffic authorities set speed limits on municipal and community roads through a speed limit by-law.

Speed Limit Authority on Municipal and Community Roads

Municipalities, First Nation communities and local traffic authorities are responsible for setting speed limits on municipal roads and community roads and are required to develop speed limit by-laws for municipal and community roads no later than September 1, 2019.

Manitoba Infrastructure has developed resources to assist local traffic authorities to set speed limits on their roads and to develop speed limit by-laws.

The public should contact their municipality or local traffic authority for information on how to request a change to a speed limit on a municipal or community road.

Speed Limit Change Requests on Provincial Highways

Manitoba Infrastructure is responsible for setting speed limits on provincial highways, provincial roads and roads within the unorganized territory of Manitoba.

How to submit a speed limit change request?

Municipalities can submit a request to change a speed limit on a provincial roadway to Manitoba Infrastructure through the Manitoba Municipalities Online Portal.

First Nations communities and Northern Affairs Communities should contact trafficengineering@gov.mb.ca or 204-945-3781 to submit a request to change a speed limit.

The public must contact their municipality or local community council to request a change to a speed limit on provincial trunk highways, provincial roads or roads within an unorganized territory. All speed limit change requests must include a council resolution to ensure community support.
