Railway Safety Officer

The Railway Safety Officer is a provincial peace officer appointed under the Provincial Railways Act. The Safety Officer is the primary contact for the shortline railways and ensures day-to-day compliance with safety, regulatory and operating requirements.

The Rail Safety Officer might meet with shortline rail operators to review safety trends and discuss common issues. These meetings are also a good opportunity for the railways to voice any concerns they may have and to speak with experts from Transport Canada and other agencies.

Shortline Railways may send Applications and renewals for Certificate of Demonstrated Fitness, Annual Reports and Accident or Incident Reports to railsafety@gov.mb.ca. When sending these requests or reports ensure the subject line clearly identifies the railway and reason for the contact.
