Know Your Rights
Parties to a hearing have a right to attend the hearing and/or be represented by legal counsel or by another person who has the appropriate legal authority or who the parties have designated in writing as their representative or a support person. If you require assistance in obtaining representation, Manitoban’s may apply to the Public Interest Law Center (PILC) to review their appeal matter. If their application is accepted by Legal Aid Manitoba, their case will be referred to the Advocacy Unit, which is supervised by the Public Interest Law Center. If you do not qualify for legal aid, the Advocacy Unit can provide you with information and guidance on the issues you are dealing with.

Parties also have a right to call and question witnesses at the hearing. At the time of the hearing, the Board will determine whether witnesses will be allowed to be present for the whole hearing or only during the period required for their testimony.
The Board will not be responsible for any costs associated to a party’s attendance and/or representation at the hearing or any costs associated to the attendance of any witnesses or support persons for the parties.
Parties have a right to have their appeal heard in French or English. The cost of an interpreter will be covered if requested through the Board. The Board will arrange for a professional interpreter.
