Parenting Resources

Manitoba First Nations, Inuit and Metis Parenting Booklets

The following parenting booklets were developed in partnership with the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health (NCCIH), First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) in BC and in collaboration with First Nations, Inuit and Metis parents, caregivers, knowledge keepers, practitioners and other Indigenous community members in Manitoba who shared their stories, teachings, ideas, Indigenous language translations, photos and feedback. All of the resources are grounded in Indigenous knowledge and traditional approaches to parenting and send the message that “Even if you did not have the parenting that you wanted or needed, you can become the parent your child needs.”

For parents and caregivers of children aged birth to 6 years:

Growing Up Healthy (PDF) focuses on the steps parents and caregivers can take to keep infants and children well, through nutrition, physical activity and caring for the body.

Family Connections (PDF) presents information for parents and caregivers on bonding, forming secure attachments with children, and connecting with extended family and community.

Parents as First Teachers (PDF) places emphasis on early childhood development and learning through experience and play.

Fatherhood is Forever (PDF) discusses the important parenting role of fathers, including learning about being a positive role model for children and some of the different approaches they can take to deal with different situations.

For parents and caregivers of children aged 6-12 years:

New*  Parenting in the Present (PDF) presents information on effective parenting skills to enhance the healthy growth and development of children in the middle years, including their self-esteem, school achievement, brain development, and health behaviours. The resource includes stories, cultural practices, guidelines, and knowledge about parenting and caring for First Nations, Inuit and Metis children aged 6-12 years.
