Adult Child (age 18+) of an Adoptee who is deceased

Manitoba Post-Adoption Services for an adult child of an adoptee who is now deceased:

Social History:

A Social History will provide you with all available information from the records on your parent's birth parents, including information about:

  • cultural heritage, medical history, physical descriptions, birth parents' education and employment history, birth parents' families, birth parents' relationship, and the circumstances that led to your parent entering agency care/being placed for adoption and
  • your parent's personal development and wellbeing prior to their adoption being finalized.

If a Social History was completed and shared previously, another copy will be provided.

A Social History is shared in a non-identifying manner and will not contain names, full dates of birth or other identifying details. The amount of information available varies case by case and is dependent on the information that was gathered and recorded at the time of your birth and adoption planning.

Register for Contact/Search with Birth Family:

Register for 'contact only' or 'contact and search' services for a birth family member including:

  • Your parent's birth mother
  • Your parent's birth father
  • Your parent's maternal birth siblings
  • Your patent's paternal  birth siblings

By registering for contact only, Manitoba Post Adoption Services will:

  • Notify you if a birth family member registers to have contact with you.
  • Share identifying information (full name, date of birth, and contact information) with your birth family if they also register.
  • Facilitate a reunion by assisting both parties with establishing direct contact with each other.

By registering for contact and search services, Manitoba Post-Adoption Services will also:

  • Search for your selected birth family member(s).
  • If located, the birth family member(s) will be advised of your interest in contact and will be given the opportunity to register in order to have a reunion with you*.

*Identifying information about a parent's birth mother or birth father will be released without their registration/consent if a search for your parent's birth mother or birth father concludes that they are over 101 years of age or are deceased (for a least one year).

NOTE: A search can only be performed for individuals named in the Department's records. A search is not performed for any person under 18 years of age or who has filed a Veto, Contact Preference, or past refusal.

Eligibility:

An adult child (18+) of a deceased adoptee who had their adoption granted in Manitoba.

NOTE: A death certificate, obituary or funeral service card is required.

An adult child of a deceased adoptee who had their adoption granted outside of Manitoba, must apply for apply for services through the jurisdiction where the adoption was granted. If you are unsure about where the adoption occured, Manitoba Post-Adoption Services may be able to provide you with information on the jurisdiction where the adoption was finalized.
