Tow Truck Lighting

Manitoba’s vehicle equipment requirements have been updated and clarified in the Vehicle Equipment, Safety and Inspection Regulation, which comes into force on March 1, 2019.
The regulation includes new tow truck lighting allowances and requirements.

Previously, tow trucks and other road-side assistance vehicles had to be equipped with at least one (1) flashing amber light, which was required to be activated both when the truck is at roadside and while traveling on a highway.

Following consultations with key stakeholders, the following changes are in effect:

  • Tow trucks must be equipped with at least one amber flashing light that is activated only while working at road side
  • Tow trucks may be equipped with up to two (2) flashing red lights under a permit issued by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles
  • Red lights may only be activated while working at roadside on a highway with a speed limit of 60 km/h or greater
  • Red lights must automatically deactivate when the vehicle is in motion.
